Guitarist Dan Schwartz and bassist Nick Salisbury play diversely informed instrumentals, formally unpredictable but always songlike, delicate but never wispy. Longtime associates, Schwartz and Salisbury make up half of the groovy and eclectic Neighborhood Quartet. On their debut album as a duo, the forthcoming Gloaming, they divide compositional duties and play together with the refinement and responsiveness that have made them busy and respected players in the Twin Cities and beyond. Schwartz has a beautiful, singing tone; a sophisticated harmonic vocabulary; and expressive command of dynamics. Salisbury—dexterous and pocketed, distinctive whether risk-taking or restrained—is one of the Twin Cities’ most called-on bassists and has toured extensively with songwriters Ryan Bingham and Brian Fallon. Steeped in jazz harmony but guided, too, by a passion for folk and R&B, the duo’s contemplative, easeful music and sculptural melodies are born of long experience in music and life but driven by a sustaining spirit of exploration.
